Which class(es) do you need?

All hospital workers and paramedics need to take the American Heart Association's CPR/AED for Healthcare Providers. Currently we only conduct renewal trainings at our community classes.

Medical occupations such as dentists or chiropractors who do not work in hospitals probably only need basic CPR/AED; however some may require the healthcare provider CPR.

Most other occupations should take our basic Adult and Pediatric CPR/AED for regular people. This class is excellent for nannies, teachers, parents, utilities and construction workers, manufacturers and most workplaces.

FIRST AID certification is required for dental hygienists, care homes, coaches, nannies, parents, summer camps, utilities and construction workers, manufacturers, and some workplaces.

Note to childcare providers: our CPR and First Aid renewal classes are too short to meet EMSA time guidelines for licensed childcare providers, though they are perfect for non-licensed nannies. However we are certified by EMSA to train licensed childcare providers in private small group settings.

ASHI's 2 hr Bloodborne Pathogen Training meets the OSHA guidelines for most occupations. This class comes with a booklet and a 1 yr cert issued at time of training. Trainings are $200 for most groups.
AIDS in the Workplace. Don can create a custom class to meet all of your HIV training needs in northern California, whether that be Management Issues or for specific occupational settings such as Hospice or Residential Care Facilities for the developmentally challenged. Don has extensive knowledge in these fields. Trainings are $200/grp, or FREE if taken in combination with our ASHI Bloodborne Pathogen training.
Interactive AIDS Education for Schools. Don can create an age appropriate HIV training program in northern California for all age children to meet your specific school guidelines, drawn from the wonderful Act Smart curriculum jointly developed by the Boys & Girls Clubs of America and the American Red Cross; plus interactive games created when Don was a Positively Speaking HIV instructor trainer for the Sonoma County AIDS Network and the CA Dept of Education in the 1990s. School discount: $50/period.

OptiWell, Inc. was incorporated in San Diego, CA in April 2004 by Sue Lockhart and Don Ross to provide you with the Optimum in Wellness training! For many years, Sue and Don were the two most requested Red Cross Workplace CPR and Babysitting Instructors in San Diego County. Following the American dream, they've now gone into business together and have thus become a training center for the American Safety and Health Institute (ASHI).

Sue Lockhart has taught CPR, First Aid, and Child Care for the Red Cross since 1991. Her knowledge of CPR in the workplace and community is truly vast and as a working mom, she brings the subject home in a warm, friendly, down to earth manner. Sue was also honored by the Fire Dept when she received a Life Saving Citation from the City of San Diego after she used her CPR skills to save her two year old nephew who was a near drowning victim. Sue teaches the majority of our classes in San Diego, although we do have other instructors to helps us out.

Don Ross began teaching as an HIV educator in 1991 and is now an expert in bloodborne pathogens. He ran programs and trained speakers for many agencies in northern and southern California. In 1998 he was hired by the San Diego Red Cross, cross-trained as a CPR and Child Care instructor, quickly becoming one of their most popular workplace instructors due to his unique use of humor to drive a point home. His classes are often compared by his students as the CPR equivalent to comedy driving school. In Feb 2006, he returned home to northern California to expand OptiWell, however he is still the person you will talk with when you register for a class in San Diego.
